USPS Change of Address the Quick & Easy Way

Are you moving soon? One of the things on your list should be changing your address with the Postal Service. A USPS Change of Address will instruct the post office to forward important mail that is still addressed to your old address to your new location. This is important because it helps prevent the possibility of missing any important statements, bills, greeting cards, and other important mailings. It also helps to protect against identity theft, because you do not want mail sitting in your mailbox at your old address if no one is living there.

You can now change your address online quickly and easily for free at sites that have partnered with the Postal Service for this purpose. These sites provide this service so that they can present you with coupons and offers for services at your new home. Our favorite is http://www.ChangeMyAddress.info. Once you submit the simple one page form, they will immediately forward the information to the Postal Service. You will receive confirmation of your address change request by email and by regular mail at your old and new addresses. The process is safe and secure and much more convenient than going to the post office to fill out a form by hand. You also reduce the possibility of errors that may occur when a postal employee enters the information on the form into the system. What you enter online is the exact information the Post Office receives into the forwarding system.

What Happens When You Submit a Change of Address?

Once you submit a Post Office Change of Address most mail that is still addressed in your name to your old address will be forwarded to your new address for a period of one year from the start date you indicated on the form.  This includes First Class, Priority Mail, and Express Mail. Periodicals (such as newspapers and magazines) will be forwarded for 60 days.  Standard mail (which may include catalogs, flyers, coupons, non-profit mailings, etc.) will not be forwarded.  It is discarded unless there are specific instructions on the mailing to do something else with it.

After one year, the mail will no longer be forwarded to your new address.  Instead it is returned to the sender with a sticker notifying them of your new address. This happens for six months after which time the change of address order expires and is no longer kept on file at the Post Office.  By this time, the people sending you things should have your new address.
